Santa Monica Launches Parklet Pilot

Just in time for beach weather, Santa Monica’s first parklets are open to the public. Local businesses, officials, and residents of the busy beach-side city are excited to welcome a concept that has thrived in neighboring Los Angeles and cities around the world. The three parklets are along Santa Monica’s Main Street, outside of sponsoring businesses Holy Guacamole, Ashland Hill, and Finn McCools.

Parklets are small public spaces which typically involve converting 2–3 on-street parking spaces into space for people, usually with landscaping and seating areas that are maintained by the adjacent individuals or businesses. Variations of this concept have been adopted by cities around the world as a way to reclaim small pieces of street space for pedestrian amenities, particularly in busy commercial districts that are lacking in park space.
